Festival Highlights

Counting Sheep is an explosive mix of theatre, dance and song and was one of the most acclaimed hits of the 2016 Edinburgh Festival. It brings the audience inside the Ukrainian revolution on Maidan Square in 2013-14 and is a deeply personal retelling of the popular uprising that succeeded in toppling the Ukrainian government. The show’s only Irish dates are here at Kilkenny Arts Festival.

The Festival will premiere an unmissable new version of one of the greatest love letters ever written, Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis. Performed by acclaimed actor Stephen Rea, with live score by Neil Martin performed by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, it is not to be missed.

Schubert: Dreaming the Sublime is a once-in-a-lifetime voyage of musical discovery through the late masterpieces of Schubert, performed by leading international and Irish artists.

StormFest is a season of plays for children and their families at The Barn Theatre from 12-20 August, presented by Barnstorm in partnership with Kilkenny Arts Festival.

One of our favourites at Arts Week is Secret Garden Music. Every day throughout the Festival, a range of artists offer pop-up performances in some of Kilkenny’s loveliest gardens. Drop by each afternoon to find out who’s playing and enjoy free performances from leading Irish and international musicians.

Finally, Marble City Sessions will close the 2017 Festival with the Festival Finale hosted by Martin Hayes, bringing together a wealth of musicians from all over the world. They will include Mongolian rockers Hanggai sharing the stage with celebrated poets Paul Muldoon and Paula Meehan, The Gloaming’s Iarla Ó Lionaird and Dennis Cahill, Swedish folk innovators Väsen, the genre-hopping Aoife Ní Bhriain, Crash Ensemble’s Kate Ellis, Colin Dunne, Neill Ní Chróinín and Malcolm Proud in a rousing celebration of shared artistic heritage and the tango of tradition and talent (20 August, St Canice’s Cathedral).

The Festival takes place in Kilkenny from the 11 to the 20 August. Check out the full programme details and book your tickets at kilkennyarts.ie.
